Painting on fresh wet lime plaster is the ultimate challenge for an artist. Preparation is the key. That means once the final coat of plaster (called the intonaco) is applied to the panel or wall the clock starts ticking.
The drawingtransfer called the cartoon is placed on the plaster. Reproducing the design ids done by means of carefully placed pin pricks through the paper then dusted with charcoal powder. Dry earth pigments (lime proof) are mixed with distilled water ahead of time and stored in glass jars .
Painting must be done swiftly in a series of washes as the plaster soaks the pigment into thesurface. Each one of the panels above was done in one sitting of 5-6 hours. The plaster tells you when the painting is done not the artist.
